R&D Restoration Insurance

Research can be worth more than the equipment storing it, and far harder to recreate after contamination, fire or freezer failure. This is the extension designed for that gap.

The Tank take

R&D restoration is a specialist extension that may cover defined costs of restoring research or development work following an insured event. It is not insurance for commercial success, failed experiments or ordinary redesign costs - the trigger and the wording control everything.

The insured event definition, restoration period, sublimit, records requirements, valuation method and the interaction with property, equipment breakdown, spoilage and cyber cover all need to be checked before you rely on the extension.

Loss pathways

How research actually gets destroyed

Reading the extension

What R&D restoration is, and what it is not

Designed to address

  • Defined costs of recreating research after an insured event
  • Labour, materials and third-party services within the sublimit
  • Restoration within the defined period

Outside the extension

  • Experiments that simply failed
  • Commercial success or lost future value of the research
  • Data-only losses that belong under cyber cover
  • Costs beyond the sublimit or restoration period

R&D restoration is commonly separately sublimited and should never be assumed from a general life sciences policy title. Ask for it, price it and read the trigger.

Insurability controls

What makes research insurable

The underwriting question is whether the research can be evidenced, valued, protected and feasibly recreated.

  1. 01

Which research assets could be lost, and where are they stored?

  2. 02

What events could destroy, contaminate or corrupt them?

  3. 03

How are samples, records and data duplicated off-site?

  4. 04

How long and how much would restoration reasonably require?

  5. 05

Which property, breakdown, spoilage or cyber sections respond first?

  6. 06

What costs or failed research are expressly outside the extension?
