Pharmacy Insurance - Introduction

Understanding The Risk

Why Pharmacy Insurance
is Different

Running a pharmacy means balancing two distinct worlds: you're a fast-paced retail business and a critical healthcare provider. Your insurance program needs to reflect that dual risk.

At Tank Insurance, we currently protect over 30 pharmacies across Australia. We know that a one-size-fits-all retail policy won't cover the clinical risks of dispensing. And a standalone medical policy won't cover the complexities of retail stock and commercial leasing.

We build tailored insurance solutions that protect both your practice and your premises.

Pharmacy Insurance - Coverage

Coverage Breakdown

What Does Pharmacy
Insurance Cover?

Two pillars of protection: your business assets and your professional registration.

Building & Property

For owners: Full replacement cover for fire, storm & impact damage to the physical structure.

For tenants: Glass cover for shopfront windows, typically required by commercial lease agreements.

Stock & Equipment

Theft protection: Coverage for cash held on premises, ATM cassettes, and stock theft.

General property: Mobile equipment, laptops, and delivery vehicles.

Deterioration of stock: Protection for temperature-sensitive inventory including vaccines and cold-chain medication.*

Public Liability

– Protection against customer slips, trips, and falls within your premises. Essential for high-traffic pharmacies.

Business Interruption

– Covers lost income and increased costs of working if a covered event forces temporary closure.

* Cold chain failure can cost thousands in vaccines and biologics. We ensure your policy limits reflect your actual stock holding, not a generic estimate.

Medical Malpractice

Claims arising from the provision of healthcare services, including:

– Dispensing errors and incorrect medication

– Incorrect dosage advice

– Adverse reactions to vaccinations administered on site

Legal Defence

– Covers the legal costs and damages associated with a breach of professional duty claim.

AHPRA Registration Protection

– Your shield during regulatory investigations and complaints against your professional registration.

– Covers legal representation costs when responding to AHPRA inquiries.

Also Available

Management Liability

Protection against unfair dismissal claims, bullying allegations, and the legal costs of defending statutory inquiries (SafeWork investigations) or tax audits.

Cyber Protection

Pharmacies hold sensitive patient data (e-scripts, My Health Record). Covers data recovery, privacy fines, and crisis management if your systems are hacked or held to ransom.

Pharmacy Insurance - Insurers

Market Access

Access to Australia's Leading Medical Insurers

Unlike industry associations that often rely on a single underwriting partner, Tank Insurance gives you access to the broader market. We benchmark your current policy against Australia's leading specialist insurers.

Is your insurance fragmented? It is common to find Medical Malpractice held with one provider and the Business Pack with another. Managing two separate policies often means double the paperwork and potential gray areas at claim time.

We keep it all together.

By consolidating your insurance with Tank, you get a single point of contact for your entire business. Whether it's a smashed shop window or a dispensing error, you make one phone call to us. We manage the claims process end-to-end, preventing the "blame game" between different insurers.

A common fear for pharmacy owners is that switching insurers means losing coverage for past work. This is a valid concern because Medical Malpractice is a "Claims Made" policy—meaning you are only covered if you have an active policy when the claim is made, not just when the incident happened.

We handle this transfer for you.

When we move your policy from an industry provider to a broker market, we ensure your Retroactive Date is carried over.

What this means:

You retain full protection for dispensing advice or services you provided years ago.

Our Promise:

We never switch a medical policy without confirming your past history is secure.

Frequently Asked Questions

With the expansion of pharmacist-led vaccinations, your liability exposure has changed. Most standard Medical Malpractice policies for pharmacists can be extended to include vaccination services, but it must be explicitly declared. We review your policy to make sure clinical services like flu shots or travel vaccines are fully covered.

If you are an employee, you may be covered under the pharmacy's master policy, but this isn't guaranteed. If you work as a contractor (ABN) or locum across multiple sites, you generally need your own individual Professional Indemnity insurance to satisfy AHPRA registration standards.

Think of it as floor versus advice. Public Liability covers physical accidents, like a customer slipping on a wet floor near the fragrance counter. Medical Malpractice covers clinical outcomes, such as a patient suffering harm because the wrong medication was dispensed or incorrect advice was given.

This falls under "Deterioration of Stock" or "Machinery Breakdown" within the Business Pack. We ensure your policy includes specific sub-limits for temperature-sensitive stock to cover the cost of replacing vaccines and biologics if your medical fridge fails.

Yes. Pharmacies are high-value targets for cybercriminals because you hold sensitive patient data. Standard business policies generally exclude cyber events. A dedicated Cyber policy covers data recovery, privacy fines, and ransomware protection if your dispensary system is locked out.
