OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST PI CASE STUDY

NDIS Occupational Therapist - Dual Occupation Placement

An NDIS-registered occupational therapist providing paediatric services had a 50/50 dual occupation split between OT work and disability care. The way the occupation was described to insurers determined what would actually be covered at claim time. We approached four insurers and placed cover at approximately $650.

THE SITUATION

An NDIS-registered occupational therapist came to us needing $2M Professional Indemnity and $10M Public Liability cover.

The provider offered paediatric OT services to children under 10 with disabilities, including at-home visits and school readiness preparation. The work was split roughly 50/50 between occupational therapy and disability care work.

That dual occupation split was the key detail. If the policy only reflected one side of the work, the provider risked a misdescription issue at claim time. Both occupations needed to be accurately captured on the policy schedule.

OUR APPROACH

We took the risk to market across four insurers: Prorisk, DUAL, Vero, and Woodina. The brief to each underwriter was clear about the 50/50 split between occupational therapy and disability care work.

This distinction matters because disability care work alongside OT changes the risk profile. It's not just clinical assessment and therapy planning. It includes direct care activities with vulnerable participants, which some insurers view differently.

We needed each insurer to confirm they were quoting on the full scope of work, not just the OT component. A policy that only covered the occupational therapy side would leave half the business uninsured.

03

THE OUTCOME

Three of the four insurers returned quotes in a tight premium spread:

  • Prorisk: approximately $650
  • DUAL: approximately $700
  • Vero: approximately $700

Woodina referred the risk and did not provide a quote.

We placed cover through Prorisk at approximately $650, covering the full dual-occupation scope with $2M PI and $10M PL. The tight spread across three quoting insurers meant insurer selection came down to policy terms and wording, not just price.

The key takeaway from this placement: for occupational therapists with dual occupations or mixed service delivery, the way the risk is described to insurers directly affects what's covered. Getting the occupation split right at inception avoids potential misdescription issues if a claim arises down the track.
